30 Awesome Rare Movie Star Photos

Sean Connery & Brigitte Bardot

Sean bonds with the Gallic sex siren in a curious meeting of underarm and head rather than minds.

Taken during the shooting of stodgy 1968 western Shalako.

Christopher Walken

Nah... That can't be Christopher Walken. Looks more like a buffed-up Mark Hamill.

But, before he specialised as Hollywood's go-to guy for anybody needing crazies, psychopaths and all-round odd bods, Walken was a fresh-faced, fighting-fit dancer.

One day, we promise to ask him what happened to make him become so unsettling.

Tony Curtis & Jack Lemmon

Jack and Tony made cinema history dragging up as Josephine and Daphne, the heroes of Some Like It Hot.

But it wasn't their last collaboration: they joined Blake Edwards' The Great Race in 1965, determined to prove their manhood by looking as butch as possible.

We think Lemmon's overdone it a bit with that... hell, what is that thing on his upper lip?

Marlon Brando

On-screen, Brando’s brooding, intense machismo was the look of the early 50s.

Little did his adoring fans know that in private Brando was a sensitive softie, collaborating with a friend on his pet project - an adaptation of Cats.

Don Johnson & Melanie Griffith

Long before Miami Vice, Don Johnson was most famous for another kind of vice - his scandalous relationship with Tippi Hedren's jailbait daughter.

This pic was taken in 1975, which would make Griffith legal...just about. But bear in mind they'd already been dating several years by this point.

Jane Fonda

She'd go on to become an intergalactic sex siren in Barbarella, win an Oscar playing a prostitute in Klute, and give horny teenagers a helping hand by inventing the celebrity work-out video.

But, as this pic shows, she was a flirty/dirty, skirts-up kinda gal long before that. Plus, she plays a mean hand of cards. Jane Fonda, we salute you.

Jack Nicholson, Lauren Bacall & Warren Beatty

In the late 70s, Warren could have anybody he wanted – and frequently did. A recent book guesstimates a staggering 12,775 notches on his bedpost.

But, judging by this shot, Golden Age temptress Bacall was the one that got away, as a rueful Beatty concedes defeat to his mate Jack.

Alfred Hitchcock

What does it take to scare The Master of Suspense, the man who turned showers, birds and the view out of the window into objects of terror?

According to this shot, he has a morbid fear of being dragged through the snow by what appears to be a Yeti. Which is probably why he never made a film about abominable snowmen.

Marilyn Monroe

Out came the peroxide curls, full-bodied pout and how-low-can-you-go necklines, and it was goodbye, Norma Jeane.

Yet, as this off-the-cuff shot from early in her career proves, the fragile girl behind the 'Marilyn' image occasionally resurfaced.

Michael & Kirk Douglas

Few Hollywood father/son dynasties look as alike as the Douglases. The only way to tell them apart is fashion - while old-school Kirk favours the rugged cowboy look, modern man Michael prefers a fluffy dressing gown.

They’re pictured here in 1969, when Kirk visited his son on the set of his first major film, Hail, Hero!

Kate Moss, Johnny Depp & Iggy Pop

London, 1996: Cool Britannia is in full-swing, and Kate Moss is one of its most famous faces. Iggy Pop’s an honorary member, too, thanks to his presence on the Trainspotting soundtrack.

Clearly, the two are meant for each other... That is, unless Johnny Depp, Moss' fella at the time, has anything to do with it.

Charlie Chaplin

Bowler hat. Baggy trousers. Moustache. When Charlie put them on, he became 'The Tramp', the movies’ first and most famous icon.

Take them off – and he’s just like any other bloke. On the pull.

Anthony Perkins & Audrey Hepburn

Hollywood, eh? You can always count on debauched movie stars to try and get an animal pissed.

Believe it or not, there's a reason for this mad behaviour: the deer was Perkins and Hepburn's co-star in 1959 jungle-girl romance Green Mansions.

Dennis Hopper

Circa 1955, when a fresh-faced Dennis Hopper starred alongside James Dean in Rebel Without A Cause and Giant, nobody could have predicted the mad career he'd enjoy.

Except, just once, when Dennis had a premonition of the future. That quizzical / embarrassed look translates as: "Super Mario Bros...What was I thinking?"

The Deneuve Sisters

Catherine Deneuve shares a quiet moment with sister (and fellow Nouvelle Vague starlet) Françoise Dorléac.

Sadly, after the two appeared together in 1967’s Les Demoiselles de Rochefort, Françoise was killed in a car accident.

Stanley Kubrick

"Wait a minute, this isn't my megaphone!"

Kubrick on the set of A Clockwork Orange - amazingly, this was the least offensive image we could find from that film.

Elizabeth Taylor

Filming 1956's cowboy saga Giant clearly made its mark on Liz.

She didn't even wait for the wardrobe department before practicising the moves that lassoed her multiple husbands.

Tim Roth

We're guessing Quentin Tarantino hadn't seen this photo when he cast Roth as a foul-mouthed, sharp-suited Reservoir Dog.

Wannabe stars, take note: rent boy chic has never been fashionable. Just because Roth got away with it doesn't mean you should follow his example.

Diane Keaton & Woody Allen

For a while, circa 1977's Annie Hall, Diane (ditzily cute) and Woody (wittily neurotic) were the Brangelina of their day. How times have changed.

What's not clear from this shot is that Woody is pushing Keaton out of the bed to make room for Mia Farrow.

Clint Eastwood

Before he stopped shaving, pulled on a poncho and went 'Without A Name' for Sergio Leone, Clint was like any other clean-cut 1950s kid.

This home snap of Clint with first wife Maggie Johnson is notable for the jazz records scattered across the floor, a subject Clint would explore in 1988's Bird.

George Clooney

Surely that’s Velma from Scooby-Doo? No, really, it's Gorgeous George from the days when he just George.

Which goes to show, there's hope for all of us.

Marilyn Meets The Queen

1957, and the Royal Premiere of The Prince And The Showgirl: a meeting between two of the era's most famous young women.

Talk about chalk and cheese, though. Her Royal Highness looks absolutely disgusted at Marilyn's full-frontal display. Unless, of course, it's envy.

Jack Nicholson

Superstar DJ, here we go.

1969 was a momentous year for rock music - Woodstock, Altamont, and Easy Rider, the film that made wicked Jack a key figure of the counter-culture. Here he is getting into character at his California home.

The Cast Of Star Wars

We'll say one thing for George Lucas. A long time ago (etc, etc), he had least had the visionary genius to cast this lot as robots, rebels, Dark Lords and Wookies.

You just woudn't get such a bizarre looking bunch headlining a blockbuster these days.

Sean Connery

The name's Body. James Body.

It might look like a grotesque Photoshop job, but Sir Sean was genuinely a competive bodybuilder in the 1950s before he thinned out his pecs (and hair) to play 007.

Jon Voight & Angelina Jolie

Three things worth observing here: 1) doesn't Angelina look just like her Dad? 2) her pouting expression has hardly changed since she was a baby; and 3) aw, how cute!

This happy snap was taken in 1977, sadly not long before Voight and Angelina's mum Marcheline Bertrand split.

Brando In The Jungle

Cast as Colonel Kurtz in Apocalypse Now, Brando demanded obscene amounts of money, turned up overweight and under-rehearsed, and mumbled his way through the shoot.

But it was his insistence on wearing a bug on his head at all times that nearly gave Francis Ford Coppola a breakdown.

John Travolta

Tired of strutting his stuff, Travolta decided to take the car...but couldn't work out how to see through the windshield.

Those weren't his feet at the beginning of Saturday Night Fever, either, you know.

Brigitte Bardot

Here's another movie star who can't quite work out what to do with her car - here, it's being used as an expensive (and easily stolen from) place to put her bag.

But let's face it, it's not the car, or Brigitte's belongings, that anybody is looking at, so she should be theft-free as long as she keeps wiggling.

Sean Penn

A rare photo? Surely that's Penn in his breakthrough role as stoner surf-dude Jeff Spicoli from 1982's Fast Times At Ridgemont High.

Yeah, but...Sean Penn smiling? Even after Milk, that's still kind of rare.
